Creating Work we Love: Aiming your Aspiration

In this session, we drew on OCADU’s Strategic Foresight & Innovation program for a recent “engaged research” project and system mapping of the challenges graduates face when matching their ideal aspirations to the work world. We employed co-creative design and dialogue to engage the questions of:

  • How might we discover or create sustainable continuing opportunities in socially responsive work?
  • How can we transform our mindsets and messages to create socially meaningful entrepreneurial enterprises?
  • How might we shift education to better support the contemporary career needs of 18-30 year olds?

The world of work is changing faster than ever before. The marketplace is becoming more competitive; people are staying employed well into their seniors; turnover rates are at an all-time high; and people are entering the workforce with more education than ever before. Our shared values have evolved from a materialistic to an anti-materialistic culture and society has not co-evolved to follow. As the one activity where individuals spend most of their waking hours, work is becoming more than just a source of income. Work is the passage through which we can each make our unique contributions to the world and realize our fullest potential.

Discovering and acting on one’s ideals comprises a challenge of
  • knowing yourself
  • discovering or making opportunities in the community and working world
  • matching one’s talents and aspirations with opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship.

We explored the aspirations of social betterment in the changing world of work with a Unify Toronto Dialogue designed for upcoming and recent graduates, as well as anyone interested in better matching their learning to socially fulfilling work.

Workshop Hosts

Peter Jones with Maggie Greyson and Angith Mohan present this workshop experience for the OCADU and Unify Toronto communities, extending the regular Unify Dialogue series. Peter is a professor in the MDes Strategic Foresight & Innovation (SFI) program at OCADU, and Maggie and Angith are SFI grad student in his Systemic Design course. Maggie and Angith recently completed co-creation (action) research into this challenge of sustainable and engaged work. They produced a social system map in the Systemic Design course, and are employing creative engagement and design techniques in this workshop developed in the research.
